Current Situation

As 2010 progressed, the travel industry was enjoying some improvement over the very difficult 2008-2009 period. While budgets for consumers and businesses remained tight, occupancy rates were increasing in the hotel industry, and airline seats were relatively full.

Today, tourism is one of the biggest economic trade sectors in the world and Cambodia is responsible for 10 % of the global GDP.

Indeed, since 2004 the number of hotels has shown a 10% annual growth to reach 450 hotels in 2010/2011, the overall tourism direct revenue has increased by 5.5% within the same period.

In addition, the online booking has increased dramatically since 2007:

  • 33% in 2007
  • 65% in 2008
  • 70% in 2009

The latest PhoCusWright study (May 2010)into trends in the European consumers travel market place find that 90% of travelers with Web access in Europe plan and book travel product completely online. (91% in Germany, 94% in France and 95% in UK)

Websites such as Trip Advisor and Agoda provide useful information to select or pre-select the hotel. However, customers will visit the hotel Website and based on the price if it is similar or cheaper than the Online Booking Engine, they prefer to book directly on the Hotel Website. Indeed, 60% of tourists that book online do it directly on the hotel Website.

Existing Solution

In order for the tourist to book on the hotel Website, the hotel needs to have an Online Central Reservation System to manage the booking, room inventories, prices, descriptions, pictures and so on.

Only a few solutions exist in Cambodia to manage online booking such as service providers, existing software or specific application developed for the hotel. Most of these solutions will charge a very high commission rate on the room's price.

In all cases, none of these solutions will offer you a payment gateway working in Cambodia.
